Murray’s Chickens are raised on an all-natural vegetarian diet of 100 percent soybeans and corn. Sometimes this feed contains GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, such as corn designed to be more resistant to drought and disease. These crops have been deemed perfectly safe for animals as well as humans to eat.
We would love to buy only non-GMO feed. Unfortunately, sourcing 100 percent non-GMO corn and soybeans is nearly impossible. Because these crops are grown in open fields, even those that start from non-GMO seed can become cross-pollinated with GMO crops from neighboring farms. To be classified as non-GMO, crops must be grown many miles away from GMO crops, inspected by a third party and never carried on equipment that touches GMO crops. In reality, feed that passes U.S. standards as non-GMO may still contain some amount of GMOs.
Additionally, when corn and soybeans that meet these standards is available, the cost is higher. We choose not to buy solely non-GMO feed because we don’t want to pass that cost on to you. We think everyone should be able to afford our chicken.
Why aren’t your products labeled organic?
We want to offer a better value. Becoming certified organic is a costly process, and that cost is passed on to the consumer. Simply put, our naturally raised chickens are more affordable.
In addition, just like organic chicken farms, we practice sustainable farming, use 100 percent vegetarian feed, raise our birds without hormones or antibiotics and our chickens are free to roam outside of cages.
Why aren’t your products labeled free-range?
Murray’s Chickens are raised cage-free indoors. Unlike caged chickens, they have plenty of room to move around as well as access to natural light and fresh air, plus additional features that help the birds express their natural characteristics, such as perching and dust bathing. We have chosen to exclude outdoor access (and therefore cannot call our chickens “free-range”) because exposure to the elements can lead to disease (remember—we’re antibiotic-free!), and contact with outside birds could possibly expose them to such diseases as avian bird flu. Healthy, happy chickens are our goal!
Are your products gluten-free?
With one exception, all of our products are certified gluten-free, including raw chicken, Chicken Sliders and breaded chicken nuggets. Pot pies are our only product that contain gluten.
Do you add melamine to your chickens’ feed?
We do not, nor did we ever, add melamine to our feed.
Do you add arsenic to your chickens’ feed?
We do not, nor did we ever, add arsenic to our feed.
Do you give your chickens growth hormones?
Added hormones have not been used anywhere in the poultry industry for over 35 years. The federal government forbids the use of artificial hormones in chicken.
Do you give your chickens antibiotics?
We do not give our chickens antibiotics ever, from breeder to egg to table.
What does it mean that your chickens are Certified Humane?
To guarantee that our chickens lead healthy, happy lives from birth to slaughter, a third party oversees the entire process. For more information about Certified Humane, visit www.certifiedhumane.org.
Why is your packaging considered eco-friendly?
Our minimum-impact packaging helps us limit our ecological footprint. The single material packaging is friendlier for the environment than a non-recyclable foam tray. Freshness and taste are sealed in a sturdy sleeve that is freezer-safe, which means no additional waste at home. (Please note that some retailers package our chickens at their store in their own packaging, which may or may not be eco-friendly.)
What is farm-to-table traceability?
Our packages tell you exactly where your chicken came from, so there’s never any guesswork.
